STEAMPUNK

El steampunk se desenvuelve en una ambientación donde la tecnología a vapor sigue siendo la predominante y por lo general localizada en Inglaterra durante la época victoriana, donde no es extraño encontrar elementos comunes de la ciencia ficción o la fantasía.

Las obras de temática steampunk a menudo muestran tecnologías anacrónicas o invenciones futuristas imaginadas por los visionarios de su época, todas ellas vistas desde la perspectiva victoriana en la cultura, el arte, la moda e incluso la arquitectura.

El steampunk se inspira principalmente en los trabajos de H. G. Wells y Julio Verne y del imaginario encontrado en sus obras, por lo que al igual que el dieselpunk, este subgénero se puede englobar dentro del movimiento retro futurista, el género de las ucronías y la ficción especulativa, pero su tendencia a incorporar elementos fantásticos y el carácter más desenfadado y utópico de sus tramas lo alejan tanto del dieselpunk como del cyberpunk.

El mundo que imagina el steampunk, como se puede descubrir, es un mundo que parece anclado en las historias de Julio Verne y H.G. Wells, padres de la moderna ciencia ficción, pero lejos de la realidad, tan avanzado científicamente, en su extraña y retorcida forma de hierro, carbón y vapor, como el nuestro. El steampunk también debe su inspiración en novelas de aventuras y ciencia romántica, como las de Arthur Conan Doyle, Mark Twain y Mary Shelley.

El steampunk original, ya que a día de hoy este subgénero se ha convertido en un movimiento plástico y maleable, es más positivista frente a la tecnología; mostrando ésta casi de forma romántica, donde sus historias son claramente utópicas y optimista, donde los problemas de esa época (superpoblación, racismo, pobreza y desempleo) conviven con los más extraños inventos propulsados por carbón y vapor.

La influencia que nutre a la corriente steampunk se encuentra, principalmente, en la ciencia ficción primitiva encontrada en las obras creadas durante el siglo XIX, así como de los elementos más característicos de la sociedad y cultura presentes en este periodo histórico concreto, poniendo un especial énfasis en la cultura británica de la épocas victoriana y eduardiana.

Obras como Frankenstein (1818) o El último hombre (1826) de la escritora romántica Mary Shelley no solo crearon precedentes para la moderna ciencia ficción, sino que hoy en día siguen siendo inspiración para estos y para la novela steampunk que se mueve por derroteros más oscuros y góticos.
